Portrait of Queen Mary II, when Princess of Orange (detail) |
As in last week's post, I propose details yet "precious." Here are the details of a work that has the power to bring the viewer into the work itself. Looking at the details of pearls, precious stones and lace represented seems to me to live in that distant time around 1685, the year it was made this portrait of Queen Mary II, when she was still Princess of Orange.
The author of the portrait is the Dutch artist Willem Wissing (1656-1687), arrived in London in 1676 as a pupil of Sir Peter Lely, continuing the work of the master to his death noting his shop until his death at the age of 31 years. This portrait is preserved at the Royal Collection, which in my opinion is one of the most incredible collections of art in the world, because members of the British royal family and the current owner is Queen Elizabeth II, because the collection is made up of 7000 paintings and 40,000 watercolors, ceramics, precious objects, old books, curtains, wall hangings and belonging to eras, artists, genres and nationalities, also because it is not stored in one place but is scattered in many of the royal residences including Hampton Court Palace, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
