Young Woman Reading (detail), Jean Honoré Fragonard, 1732–1806 |
This oval canvas came to light in 1925 with other French paintings from Ernest Cognacq’s collection. The young woman’s bare breast indicates that she is not a portrait sitter but a model, and the antique oil lamp suggests that she is in allegorical guise, though it is impossible to be more specific. The Goddess Minerva (Detroit Institute of Arts), which is the same shape and very close in size, has been proposed as a pendant; the two paintings may have been a pair and could also have belonged to a larger set.
"Details make perfection and perfection is not a detail" (Leonardo da Vinci)
I often like to look carefully at the details of a painting or a sculpture, which are so perfect as to be a masterpiece in the masterpiece. Return on ART blog post series dedicated to the details in the art, or how to admire a masterpiece through a close encounter.
