MINIARTEXTIL 2013. Eros

As promised here are the most beautiful pictures of my participation in the paint of the exhibition "Peter Bellotti. Another Canaletto", which was held last Saturday in Venice. It 's the first time that an exhibition is devoted to monographic this painter who has only recently been re-evaluated. I do not deny that it was exciting to see these works, coming mostly from private collections and gathered together for the first time, representing the artistic career of a painter's style and personal self.

Doge's Palace

0

The month of August, you know, it was full of events and I had the opportunity to visit some wonderful exhibits, but also wonderful museums, such as the Doge's Palace in Venice.
Doge's Palace has Venice history written in its walls. It is Amazing! Full of wonderful works, and magnificent in architecture. I could write a blog just to tell you about this amazing building and the history that preserves. The thing that intrigued me was the figure of the doge and the great attention that the Venetians had to avoid abuse of power. Doge was no more than a noble among nobles. Very current is not it?
The public life of the Doge could be compared to a liturgy: he was necessarily present at Repubblic ceremonies, embodying the high power of Venice as an actor.
In many masterpieces, witch I admired at the Doges's Palace, the posture of the Doge, devotedly kneeling before the lion of St Mark, effectively clarifies his first duty, that of serving the republic.

Edvard Munch and the Dilemma of Emancipation

This year I decided to dedicate the month of August to visit exhibitions that I was intrigued by the subject matter. After visiting the exhibition When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013”, on display at the Headquarters of the Prada Foundation in Venice, I was fascinated by the title of the exhibition of the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, and that from the articles that I read promised viewing works just notes Munch. "Beware of the Holy Whore: Edvard Munch and the Dilemma of Emancipation" is a project organised by the Office for Contemporary Art Norway and Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice, as the official Norwegian representation at the 55th International Art Exhibition. The exhibition includes a serie of rarely exhibited works by Edvard Munch in addition to a newly commissioned film by Lene Berg, “Ung Løs Gris” (Dirty Young Loose 2013), and revolves around emancipation an issue Always vexed with contradiction, between the realm of freedom and consequences of the isolation that often accompany the pursue of a different life.

The exhibition begins with the film by Lene Berg "Ung Løs Gris" (Dirty Young Loose 2013), a film that concentrates on three characters who are interrogated about their roles as either victims or perpetrators in a complex situation. The film explores the interpretation of human behaviour based on preconceptions about roles and norms. Just like the exhibition as a whole, the film presents the deconstruction of an original scene which functions as a catalyst for a revision of the politics of liberation, of gender struggle and of internal conflict, the dilemma of emancipation.

The exhibition continues with works by Munch. Munch’s emphatic treatment of these themes from 1902 to 1908, before entering the asylum, reflected an internal ambiguity and anguish. Munch described this period as an ‘eternal civil war’, after which his work moved to a more distanced treatment of subjects, in social caricatures in which he offers an ironic critique of an increasingly capitalist and permissive society.

When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013

Walter del Maria, Art by Telephone, 1969.
"If this telephone rings, you may answer it. Walter De Maria is on the line and would like to talk to you" / "Se questo telefono squilla puoi rispondere, Walter De Maria è in linea e vorrebbe parlare con te"

More than 40 years later, “When Attidudes Become Form” comes to life again, althought without the initial phrase, “Live in your Head”. Ca’ Corner della Regina, site of the Fondazione Prada, is endowing itself with ascetic white walls and minimalist style typical of a 1970s museum. The aim being to reconstruct a 1:1 scale copy of the Kunstalle in Berne, which in 1969 hosted an exhibition that proved a milestone, because it marked the beginning of the avant-garde movements of that decade, but above all for Harald Szeemann’s layout, which was so closely linked to the works themselves a sto become an integral part of them.
The 1969 exhibition celebrated the fortuitous and chaotic nature of art, its susceptibility to all possible languages and all possible materials and all the practical, unprivileged means.

I was not born yet in 1969 and I have dealt with a visit to this exhibition with some doubt and suspicion to see an exhibition nostalgic. At the bottom of Berne was an exhibition based on improvisation and artistic freedom. How was it possible to do a remake and make it a historical relic? This exhibition, however, surprised me. The location in an ancient Venetian building of works which in 1969 marked a turning point in contemporary art produces an effect of breaking even today. I'm not sure that he felt the sensations experienced by visitors in 1969, but I at the end of the visit I was sure I saw a show that will change the way expose works of art and to build the exhibition spaces.

The show is a remake, even a readymade or an archeological object that is restored by putting together its different fragments. In the same way that the spaces of the Kunsthalle were occupied by a generation of young revolutionary artists in 1969, taking the same approach, the richly decorated spaces of Ca’Corner della Regina are in turn being invaded by the Kunsthalle’s twentieth-century rooms.
This exhibition has also allowed me, for the first time, to understand the real message of rupture of the art of those years and that of my generation is often not perceived. In those years everything was left to the liberating process of doing, where the viewer was not impeded by boundaries, protection systems, pedestals or perimeters, the exhibition became a dialectical field of encounter between the individual artists and the curator, between the event and the architecture: a place where the works formed links with each other, in a kind of continuously-evolving organic weave.

With “When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013” the Fondazione Prada is reflecting on the notion of the reproducibility of an exhibition through an attempt to broaden the idea of the remake-a common and frequent practice in other cultural domains, such as cinema and music-to the field of art.
