This is a portrait of Helena Fourment, who married Rubens in 1630 when she was 16 and he was in his 50s. Rubens, inspired by Raphael who had portrayed his lover, painted revealing scenes of his own private life. Helena often appears in his mythological scenes and here poses frankly for her husband’s eyes in the shadows of an Antwerp bedroom.
