Gustav Klimt (July 14, 1862 – February 6, 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement.
Klimt realizes for the home of industrialist Adolphe Stoclet in Brussels opera called "the tree of life." The complete work consists of 3 panels: The Tree is the central part, the other two parties are waiting and Embrace. The sequence of panels wants to tell some kind of story: a young girl waits for her beloved among the golden boughs of the tree of life, and at last realized his dream to join him, with passion.
It is a mosaic of marble, coral, hard stones and tiles: the representations of the three panels are rich in symbols that reassembled all the themes of Klimt: floral motifs, the role of women, the death of vegetation that is reborn through the loop the seasons. In the first panel, under one of the trees, we see a dancer representing L 'expectation. In the second panel we see the tree of life. In the third panel we find the embrace, which is realized in the pair and represents the reconciliation between the two sexes. The gold that forms a halo around the couple gives the work great value, increasing its preciousness.
